For this part of my blog the work of literature that I choose was one I have discussed before, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. I choose this work because to me it is such a visible work. Meaning the story relies so heavily on images. I have read this book multiple times and have seen the old movies that are based on it. I probably got interested in this book after watching The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which came out in 2003. Dorian Gray plays a spy and a villain. His character is first introduced in a gun fight and he gets shot multiple times but he does not get injured. The movie ends with Dorian being shown his picture but it really does not explain much about it and why he cannot bear to look upon it. After this I decided to get the book and read it for myself. I fell in love. Dorian intrigued me; I loved the mystery of his character. I felt Dorian’s character was self-centered but he is only doing what is considered human. He desires youth and to live forever, something that many of us think about. Unfortunately, I have never had the opportunity to read the book in any kind of school setting, but I would have liked to. I think this would have been one book I would have loved to discuss and it would have been very fun and enlightening.
